"All it does is rain. But it never rains enough to cool my fever. All it does is rain."

I suppose what it ultimately comes down to is a filtering process. With so much music out there, you can't possibly listen to it all. There has to be some way to determine what you will take the time to absorb. Thus the delay in my getting around to bands like
The Long Winters. There's been plenty written about them lately but I chose to ignore them until now because there were simply too many others to attend to. Plus I really, REALLY hate
that picture of him.
But it turns out that's OK, because this is a band with staying power. They're solid. I wouldn't say there's anything outrageously fantastic about their sound. I mean, it's not as though I heard them and thought, holy shit, I've never heard anything like this before! But that doesn't matter either. They're slow-growers of the very best kind, the kind that I when I listen to the words, I realize they're speaking my language. When I listen again, I get what the guitars and bass are saying, too. Each time I hear more and more and like it better and better.
Part of what I like about their sound might be a result of Chris Walla's production, especially on
The Worst You Can Do Is Harm. Regardless, just take my word for it and start listening to them now.
The Long Winters are: Nabil Ayers (drums), Eric Corson (bass, vocals), John Roderick (guitars, vocals, songwriter, the guy in the picture), and Mike Squires (guitars, keys).
